Compositing

A composit is the layering of various elements together to achieve a polished final product.

For example in a movie special effects shot you might have several layers:

* an actor’s shot on ‘green screen’ running away – perhaps towards the camera
* a background plate, which might be a car exploding
* an explosion that was created using particle simulation software
* a 3d constructed vehicle that matches the filmed vehicle on the background plate

A compositor then takes these layers into their special compositing software and and positions and colour grades everything until the layers all match and look seamless.

This is the base edit as an example. Green screen is used to help isolate the main elements toapply effects to and around.
